What a QR code is good at
A QR code is two-dimensional, so it can hold far more data: a full URL, a WiFi login, a vCard, or several hundred characters of text. It's also readable by any modern smartphone camera, which makes it the better choice for anything aimed at a general consumer rather than a dedicated scanner gun.
Restaurant menus, event check-in, packaging that links to a product page, and marketing materials almost always reach for QR codes today because no extra hardware is required — just a phone.
